Your marketing plan should have a mix of various sources such as: Organic Search Engine Optimization, Pay Per Click Advertising, Social Media Traffic and Advertising, Blogs, Articles, Directory listings, Email Newsletter campaigns and Traditional Advertising like TV, Radio, Print, Billboards and Telemarketing. The actual mix of these sources depends on the type of business and what objectives the company has and what has worked in the past and what areas they want to focus on in the future.
Developing a marketing strategy is incredibly important in avoiding wasted time/money exploring channels that are not necessarily the most effective.  However, a website that functions properly, has information that is easily digestible by the consumer, is of genuine use, and also converts users into customers is the first step.  Once you have covered this off, you can then move onto the marketing.  Do it the other way around and you will find yourself spending a lot of money with few returns...

If you are looking to get the word out about your business, then become an expert in the field. Research reporters who cover stories on the media outlets your customers read. Reach out to the reporter who covered a story in the past that seems down the alley of what your company does. Then submit a very short synopsis of what you would contribute if given the opportunity. Don’t be shy. There is no harm in asking a reporter if they are open to contributing writing ideas. If you truly are an expert in the field, then give them something juicy to publish. Make sure the journalist links back to your company’s website.

These aren't the only marketing strategies that can be executed for next to nothing, so don't limit yourself. Do your research, diversify your strategies, and keep progressing toward your ultimate goals. The beauty of these strategies is that they can work on a passable level with a minimum investment, but if you invest more money, the payoffs start increasing proportionally. You can start off with almost no investment, and by the time you start earning enough revenue to double down on these strategies, you'll be experienced enough to know how to maximize your ROI.
I agree 100% with Lewis' advice. I was the only person thinking about marketing in my first role, and know firsthand just how much there is to get done and how there's always more you could do. What I did then, and what I suggest now, are starting with the one or two avenues you believe will have the largest ROI. Once you're comfortable with those and how they're running, add more to the mix. However, only add more if you have time to add more. 

Influencer marketing: Important nodes are identified within related communities, known as influencers. This is becoming an important concept in digital targeting. It is possible to reach influencers via paid advertising, such as Facebook Advertising or Google Adwords campaigns, or through sophisticated sCRM (social customer relationship management) software, such as SAP C4C, Microsoft Dynamics, Sage CRM and Salesforce CRM. Data-driven advertising: Users generate a lot of data in every step they take on the path of customer journey and Brands can now use that data to activate their known audience with data-driven programmatic media buying. Without exposing customers' privacy, users' Data can be collected from digital channels (e.g.: when customer visits a website, reads an e-mail, or launches and interact with brand's mobile app), brands can also collect data from real world customer interactions, such as brick and mortar stores visits and from CRM and Sales engines datasets. Also known as People-based marketing or addressable media, Data-driven advertising is empowering brands to find their loyal customers in their audience and deliver in real time a much more personal communication, highly relevant to each customers' moment and actions.[37]
Links to your site are extremely valuable – When another website links to yours, search engines consider that an indicator that your site contains valuable content. Not so long ago, getting dozens of links from low-quality sites was all it took to boost your ranking. Today, the value of a link to your site depends on the quality of the site that linked to you. Just a few links to your business from high-traffic sites will do wonders for your ranking!
Another distinct advantage of internet marketing is that the statistics involved in any marketing campaign can be logged and reviewed with ease. This, in turn, enables marketers to analyze what works and what does not, and if their products appeal to certain age groups or people in certain parts of the world.
